Excerpt

Ella Walker watched Bryce Monday as he refused to drink his milk from the cup. Jennifer Reinhart's face transformed into a hideous mask of anger. Ella knew the teacher didn't like being told "no" by anyone...and especially a retarded child like Bryce.

It had become a constant battle between Jennifer and the tiny boy, and Ella feared for him.

Ella winced as she watched Jennifer squeeze Bryce's cheeks in a vicious attempt to make him open his mouth. Bryce tried to wiggle out of her grasp and squealed in pain.

Bryce was eight-years-old. At birth, he was diagnosed as having an unusually small brain, and because of this, was developmentally disabled. He was small for his age, and weighed twenty-five pounds and was only three feet tall. He was pigeon-toed and had a rigid, jerking motion when he walked. Locks of naturally curly black hair smothered his oval-shaped head. His skin tone was smooth like peanut butter and his teeth as white as piano keys. His smile could brighten any room.

Jennifer Reinhart was the teacher in the developmentally disabled classroom at Carter Elementary School in the Melbourne Public School System in Melbourne, Wisconsin. She had been a teacher for eight years.

Jennifer shrieked, "You're going to drink this cup of milk."

Bryce tried desperately to free himself, but wasn't strong enough. He cried and screamed the only two words he knew..."Mommy, No."

He tried to bite Jennifer's hand, to free himself from her clutches, but he was no match for her.

She released him and Bryce tried to run.
